LE RECORD DU MONDE DE L'HEURE
Petits Amis Sportifs, France, 1959

An unusual little game from François Cardinet's collection that can be hardly considered a cycling game. However, being the only game, as far as I know, that addresses the hour record, one of the most famous cycling events, this collection would not be complete without it.

This "board" maesures 25 x 2o cm. The plastic riders are included just for ambience, since they are not needed for the game. The players keep track of the dice throws by turning the clock handles.

Basically, the players throw the dice twelve times, add up the numbers thrown, and the one with the lowest result wins the game. Notice that the rules mention dice in plural though there is only one die (at least, in this copy of the game).

The cyclists are 44 mm long. One of the figurines is not even a cyclist but a motorbike!

François found this game seemingly with the original staples, suggesting that there was one die originally included. However, I cannot be sure if at some point the staples had been removed and replaced. In fact, that is what I did to scan the game. Of course, the cardboard handle says "dés" in plural, so I guess that there should have been two.

Since the game is quite rare to find, I have only seen another copy that I can remember. It also had three cyclists and a motorbike (in different colours, though, and maybe one cyclist was in a different position), but unfortunately it had lost the dice.

Dating this game is not a problem, luckily. However, determining the name of the illustrator/author of the game is trickier. With a great deal of imagination, I read "Nöel Dufonds". (Keep in mind that the signature measures only 2 cm. You are probably seeing it much bigger than it really is). Any suggestion?

Thanks, Mathilde, for gifting me your father's collection of cycling games.
